Alchi Monastery

Alchi Monastery, located in Alchi village near Leh, Ladakh, is the oldest monastery in the region, about 65 km from Leh by the Indus River. This monastic complex, built between 958 and 1055 by Guru Rinchen Zangpo, includes multiple temples and is administered by Likir Monastery. Key structures include the Dukhang Assembly Hall, the three-storied Sumtseg temple, and the Manjushri Temple, featuring Kashmiri architectural styles. The monastery showcases ancient wall paintings, large Buddha statues, and intricate wood carvings. Alchi is accessible while traveling between Kargil and Leh, with parking available in the village and souvenir shops nearby.
